Mary Frances Bleidt, 82, of Charleston passed away on Monday, December 27, 2010 at Hubbard Hospice House.
She was born in Lexington, Ky., on December 15, 1928 to the late Francis Chester and Mary Alyce Gash.
She graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington and later earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Kentucky and a master's degree from the University of Virginia.
She was very involved in her community, beginning with the Dunbar City Planning Commission. She was also involved with, and worked for, Action for Appalachian Youth (AAY CD). She worked with the Kettering Foundation Grant at GW High School.
She was known as "the Mother of Community Education" in Kanawha County. This began at Cedar Grove in the former high school, when it was made into a Community Education Center.
Mary Frances also worked with the Daily Mail on major projects, including the Youth Appreciation Awards and the spelling bees. She also worked with the Chamber of Commerce to obtain business adoptions for the area schools.
She went to work for the Kanawha County Community Council as a consultant for Glenwood and Chandler Elementary schools, establishing a mentorship program.
She was also on the board of the Kanawha Valley Senior Services and was very active on the United Way committees and at Edgewood Summit.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Anthony Bleidt, and her sister, Eleanor Gash Fothergill.
She is survived by her children, Barry Anthony (Shirley Ann) Bleidt, Bradford Chester Bleidt, Brenda Frances Bleidt and Blakeley Price (Maureen Fleming) Bleidt; grandchildren, Brittany Alice Bleidt, Christian Francis Bleidt, Edmond Taylor Bleidt, Travis Hayes Bleidt, Robert Allen Hager and Nicolette Frances Bleidt; great-grandchildren, Emma Catania Bleidt and Emma Jade Bleidt; and many, many friends.
A service to honor the life of Mary Bleidt will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Snodgrass Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Nolan officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
