Edmond P. Garvey was the founder and first president of Springfield Technical Community College, He died at the Holyoke Soldier's Home at the age of 86.

In 1967 Mr. Garvey established what is today the largest community college in Massachusetts. He served as president for seven years.
Born in Wilbraham and a lifelong resident of Springfield, Mr. Garvey served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an expert in electronics, sonar and radar at both Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In his release in 1950, Mr. Garvey was appointed commander, U.S. Surface Battalion 1-7, and served as information officer for the U.S. Naval Academy, retiring after 21 years of service.
In 1950, he was appointed director of vocational/technical education for the city of Springfield and in 1953 he founded Springfield Technical Institute.
In 1960, he implemented a milestone training program for unemployed and minority members of the Springfield area, and spearheaded other initiatives to further the causes of education and opportunity for minority citizens.
The founding of STCC came after the closing of the Springfield Armory and the ensuing vacancy of the Armory facilities. Mr. Garvey had been appointed in 1965 to a committee to plan for the funture use of the complex, and he saw the opportunity to develop the state's first and only technical community college.
Mr. Garvey retired as president of the college in 1974 and was named President Emeritus.

Mr. Garvey leaves his wife, Mary (Gibbons) Garvey, a sister, Katherine Garvey; a niece, Pauline Kimball; and a nephew, James M. Garvey, all of Springfield.

The funeral will be Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. from the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St. Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Visiting hours are Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
