Last rites were to be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Roberts Avenue Methodist church for Mrs. Ada Gunn, 69, of 3755 Blodgett, longtime superintendent of the Beaumont Children's home on Highland avenue. Mrs. Gunn died Saturday night following a long illness. The Rev. R.C. Terry, Methodist district superintendent of the Palestine district, was to officiate, with burial in Magnolia cemetery under the direction of the Carroll-Wallace funeral home. Names as pallbearers were Sidney T. and J.P. Sparks, B.E. Fairchild, Marion Monroe, Wilbur Balmer and James E. Gammadge. Mrs. Gunn had served as "mother" to hundreds of children of hte home throughout the past 27 years she had been superintendent. Coming to Beaumont 32 years ago from Dayton, within a few years she became associated with the home when it was known as the Day Nursery and was located at Highland and Lavaca in a frame building. She continued to serve as its head when the brick building on Highland was erected and when it became the Children's home. Boys and girls who have never known any other home gave to Mrs. Gunn the deep affection of "own" children, and scores of them through the years kept in touch with her, writing and returning to visit her, after leaving the home. Her understanding of children, her influence on the lives of the boys and girls in the home, made her recognized as one of the finest characters in this area. Children of the home attended South Park schools, from elementary through high school and their good records attested to the excellent training given them by Mrs. Gunn. Members of the children's home board said Monday that "we have lost a great friend of homeless children." Mrs. Gunn had been in ill health for some time and had been seriously ill since she underwent an operation about three months ago. Mrs. Gunn was a native of Goliad. Survivors include a son and two daughters, two sisters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
