Birth: 1791
Virginia, USA
Death: 1867
Tate County
Mississippi, USA

James is obviously buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery established on land he owned, and known locally as Garrott - Wright Cemetery. There is evidence of numerous unmarked graves in this nearly abandoned cemetery.

Son of Robert and Verlinda Cox GARRETT. After their children were born in Virginia, Robert and his family migrated to Montgomery Co, KY.

Most of James Garrott's siblings remained in KY, or migrated to Iowa or Illinois. However, James migrated south to Tennessee before 1824, then to Alabama about 1837 and eventually to Desoto Co, MS (now Looxahoma, Tate Co) where a daughter was born in 1842.

Somewhere along the way James changed the spelling of his name to GARROTT. James and Sophia had eleven known children who survived to adulthood.

The first record of James buying land near Looxahoma was in 1845. However, by the 1860 Agriculture Census for Desoto Co, James is listed with 1,600 acres and ginned 100 bales of cotton that year.

After the Civil War, James quickly disposed of most of his land, selling it to various children and their spouses.

His 18 May 1866 will is on file at the Desoto Co courthouse in Hernando. Desoto County Probate Court, December 1867 Term: Sophia Garrott submitted the last will and testament of James Garrott, deceased, to the Court. It is shown as filed by the Court on 18 December 1867. It likely took about three months between his death and the Court filing.

In additon to the ten children listed here, they had an older son, Robert Clayton Garrot who is buried in Bethesda Cemetery in Senatobia, MS. Robert Clayton Garrott is listed as buried in this (Wright Cemetery) in error, on FindAGrave. Robert does have two sons, James G. and Robert J. Garrott, and daughter, Charity O. Meacham, buried in Wright Cemetery.
