|Death: ||Aug. 24, 2011|
On Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m., Sister Bertha Garrett made her final flight home.
She is survived by her children, Charles and Diane Garrett, Harold Garrett, and Carrie and Bill Farrow; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Carter and Fannie Leytham; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Sister Garrett was one of three surviving founding members of the First Pentecostal Church in Pensacola, FL since its inception in 1933.
During her early life she and her husband Ed Garrett operated several grocery businesses in Pensacola. They also owned the old Southern Hotel on North Barcelona Street.
There was never a task that Bertha was afraid to tackle. While in her fifties she drove a school bus for Escambia County and Catholic School Systems. During World War II, she volunteered to be an ambulance driver. If she had been asked I am sure she would have more than willing to drive a Sherman Tank.
Earlier in her church ministry Sister Bertha founded, organized and was the President of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Southeastern District of The United Pentecostal Church, International including the states of Florida, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.
Although Sister Bertha was 95 at her home going, she was still an avid church goer. In fact, she was in church the Sunday morning before she passed away on Wednesday.
She has left a void that will be next to impossible to fill. I am sure the angels did rejoice at her arrival in Heaven.
A special thanks to the staff at Consulate Health Care Center.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 27, 2011 at First Pentecostal Church with Reverend Paul Welch, Reverend Brian Kinsey and Reverend Troy Shurte officiating. Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, August 26, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
