He grew up on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where his father was keeper of the Escanaba Light House. He enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II, and saw action on a Coast Guard ship on the North coast of Africa. Following the War, he entered flight school in Dallas, Texas, and then went to Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida for further flight training. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lois R. Garrett of Mobile; son Christopher Garrett and daughter-in-law Dana of Mobile; daughter Deborah Garrett of Mobile; son Timothy Garrett and daughter-in-law Debra of Lancaster, Pa.; daughter Susan G.
