Cdr. Daniel Joseph Garrett (USCG ret.) passed away Sunday Nov. 30, 2008 at his home in Mobile, Alabama at the age of 90. He grew up on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where his father was keeper of the Escanaba Light House. He enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II, and saw action on a Coast Guard ship on the North coast of Africa. Following the War, he entered flight school in Dallas, Texas, and then went to Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida for further flight training. He was a lifetime member in the Ancient Order of the Pterodactyl (number 242). Cdr. Garrett was an air-sea rescue pilot for many years, piloting seaplanes, helicopters, and other fixed-wing aircraft. During his career, he was stationed in such postings as Honolulu, Hawaii; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Norfolk, Virginia; Argentia, Newfoundland; Traverse City, Mich.; Hamilton, Bermuda; and Long Island, New York. He was also Executive Officer at the Coast Guard Training Facility in Cape May, New Jersey. Following his retirement from the Coast Guard in 1966, he moved to South Florida as an officer with the Merchant Marine Service, serving on tankers and container ships throughout the Caribbean and also on cruise ships like the Queen Elizabeth II. He then decided to remain domestic in his travels and enjoyed working as the pilot of the Miami Seaquarium hydrofoil and later as the captain for the tour boat Paddlewheel Queen, both out of Fort Lauderdale Fla. In his spare time he became a proficient tennis player; and was constantly busy with household and gardening projects in their Pompano Beach home. They relocated to Mobile, Alabama in 2007. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lois R. Garrett of Mobile; son Christopher Garrett and daughter-in-law Dana of Mobile; daughter Deborah Garrett of Mobile; son Timothy Garrett and daughter-in-law Debra of Lancaster, Pa.; daughter Susan G. Crowley and son-in law Paul Crowley of Hood River, Ore.; and grandsons Brian, Kyle, and Stephen Garrett of Lancaster. On Friday Dec. 5, at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola Naval Air Station, a military interment ceremony was held in honor of his life.
