Burl S. Garrett Jr., age 76, of Shalimar, Fla., passed on to a better world on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
He was born on July 17, 1924, in Pensacola, Fla.
Burl honorably and proudly served his country, beginning at Pearl Harbor in 1941 and finishing active duty in a POW camp in Germany after 12 successful aircraft missions. He continued serving his country and retired from cxivil service in 1968.
Burl left a legacy of love and integrity and was a dedicated husband and father who provided well for his family. He had many friends in the Fort Walton Beach community, was a member of Masonic Lodge in Florala, Ala., and enjoyed fishing, in addition to skeet and trap shotting.
He will be missed greatly, but the strength of his character will live on through his survivors.
Burl's surviving family includes his loving wife Lorraine of 57 years; daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Ron Ramey of Nashville, Tenn.; son, Don Garrett of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Chandra Ramey and Jonathan Ramey; and nephews, Chuck and Brian Fryer.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Little Chapel Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Little Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. James G. Cole officiating. Following the service, burial will be in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla., at 12:30 p.m. with military honors.
Little Chapel Funeral Home, 910 Beal Pkwy., Fort Walton Beach, is entrusted with arrangements.
