James F. Garrett, Jr.
James F. Garrett, Jr. of Yorklyn, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 5, 2011.
He graduated from Alexis I. DuPont High School in 1949 where he excelled as an athlete in football and baseball. James retired from the NVF Company in Yorklyn after 43 years of service, earning a lifetime membership to the NVF Management Club. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1955. He was a lifetime member of the Hockessin Fire Company. James played baseball for the Yorklyn Semi-Pro League, and later played softball for Worthy Bros. He was inducted into the Old Timers Baseball Association in 1985 in Kennett Square, PA. Later, he became actively involved with Piedmont Little League for many years, thus earning the nickname, "Old Timer".
James was predeceased by his parents, James and Elizabeth (Campbell) Garrett, and his loving wife, Lucille B. Garrett. He is survived by his children, Bonnie Fields of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Patrick of Pike Creek, Kathy of Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, and Beth Casper and her husband Pete of Hockessin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elisa, Maggie, and John Klee.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 10 am at St. Mary of the Assumption, Hockessin. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Ashland. A viewing will be held on Friday, July 8th from 6-8 p.m. at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, Hockessin. Kindly omit flowers.
