Martha Josephine (Martie Jo) Irwin Garrard, age 90, of 2221 Wildwood Circle, Columbus, GA., 31906, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at her home. A memorial service was held November 28, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church of Columbus. The Reverend Charles Hasty of Columbus and the Reverend Suzanne Garrard Fletcher of Dollar, Scotland officiated. Mrs. Garrard was born September 12, 1918 in Topeka, Kansas the daughter of Samuel James Irwin and Hester Kersey Irwin. Mrs. Garrard was a proud graduate of Washburn Rural High School and the University of Kansas. She was an avid Jayhawk basketball fan. Prior to her marriage she worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in the Topeka office where she developed a lifelong love of trains. She moved to Columbus after her marriage to Leonard Earnest Garrard. She enjoyed working for the W. C. Bradley Company and the Bradley Center Hospital where she retired at the age of 75. Mrs. Garrard was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Juanita Brawner Circle and the J. Calvin Reid Sunday School Class. Mrs. Garrard was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard of Columbus, GA; sisters, Mary (Bill) Nolan of Topeka, KS. and Mildred (Glenn) Glassey of Denver, CO.; brother, Harry (Agnes) Irwin of Colorado City, CO. She is survived by her son, Robert Garrard of Columbus; two daughters, Diane Blackwell and her husband Mike of Columbus, and Suzanne Noonan of Lexington, VA; former daughter-in-law, Annie Garrard of Columbus; six grandchildren and one great granddaughter; and extended family members, Marilyn Kay (David) Starr, Susan (Al) Hammons and Scott Michael (Diana) Starr all of Topeka.
