Former Anchorage resident Nina Jean Fredenberg Garland, 42, died Oct. 22 at home in Helena, Mont. Services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kalispell, Mont., with the Rev. Darold Reiner officiating. Burial was at Glacier Memorial Gardens. A memorial service was held in Helena at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Mayer officiating.
Mrs. Garland was born Sept. 27, 1951, in Kalispell, to Dale and Jean Fredenberg, and lived in Kalispell most of her life. She graduated from Flathead High School in 1969. She earned an associate degree in computer science from Flathead Valley Community College and worked for Anaconda Aluminum Co. and later ARCO in Columbia Falls, Mont., and Anchorage for 19 years as a computer analyst. In November 1992, Mrs. Garland began working at Blue Cross|Blue Shield in Helena, where she was beginning a new life closer to her family and the mountains of Montana that she loved, her family said. Mrs. Garland was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, most recently as a member of First Lutheran Church in Helena. Her family said: "She was a kind and giving soul, always putting others' needs before her own. She was a dedicated daughter and mother, active in her church. She enjoyed being with people and making crafts of all kinds."
She is survived by two daughters, Heather and Emily of Helena; parents, Dale and Jean of Kalispell; two sisters, Hazel and her husband, Dan Riebe, and Connie Bush, all of Kalispell; four brothers, Alan and his wife, Brenda of Columbia Falls, Virgil and his wife, Lori of Odessa, Texas, and Anson and Harlan of Kalispell; 10 nieces and nephews; and many other relatives. The family suggests that memorials be sent to First Lutheran Church of Helena or the Friendship Center of Helena, 1503 Gallatin, Helena, Mont. 59601. Arrangements are under the director of Johnson Mortuary in Kalispell.
