Obituary, The Columbia Daily Tribune, September 26, 2008:

Robert Edwin Garey, 85, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Boone Hospital Center after a short illness.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, with memorial service following at Calvary Episcopal Church in Columbia. He made a gift of body to the University of Missouri, so there will be no burial at this time.

Robert was born on Dec. 24, 1922, in Villisca, Iowa, to Ray and Opal Strain Garey. He married Gail Box in May 1982.

He was self-employed in farming and was a horse trainer before his retirement.

He was an Army veteran and served in Germany during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Gail, of the home; two sisters, Dorothy Odson and husband Glenn of Corning, Iowa, and Virginia Simet and husband Tom of Des Moines, Iowa; brother Bill Garey and wife Bonnie of Villisca; son Ronald Garey of Crawford, Neb.; daughters Sharon Cotten and husband Randy of Holdenville, Okla., and Marcia Oman and husband Conrad of Wheatland, Wyo.; and stepdaughter Alyssa Sapp and husband Brian, and granddaughter Brianna Sapp of Columbia.

He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Maxine Haffner, Pauline Wheeler and Lola Odson; and granddaughter Christina Sapp.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Miami, Fla., 33136. Online condolences may be left for Robert's family at www.heartlandcremation.com.
