Gerard S. Garey
Gerard S. Garey, 90, of Wilmington, DE, died at home on Friday, February 29, 2008.
Mr. Garey was a native of Wilmington, a member of the first graduating class of Archmere Academy and a graduate of Catholic University. He proudly served in WWII as a Captain in the Army. Following military service, he was employed for 20 years in the Advertising Department of DuPont, then accepted the position of Executive Director of The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, where he worked for 30+ years, retiring at 80 as President. While his roots were in Wilmington, his heart was in Ocean City, MD where he happily spent weekends and summers since childhood. Throughout his lifetime, he was a devout Catholic, an avid reader, passionate fisherman, country music aficionado and credible artist. A good man - warm of heart, gentle, seeking the right, charitable in thought as well as deed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Isabel "Ma-bel" Iriarte Garey in 1987. Within immediate family, he is survived by their 4 children, Patricia M. Garey of Wilmington, DE, Gerard J. Garey and wife, Carol, of Ocean Pines, MD, Elizabeth Garey Byrne and husband, John, of Newark, DE and Frank L. Garey and wife, Regan, of Wilmington, DE; 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. He is also survived by his sister, Louvonne "Bonnie" G. Knox Tigani of Lewes, DE and sister-in-law, Carmen I. Calbeto and husband, Gabriel, of Longwood, FL.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, on Saturday, March 8, at St. Joseph's-on-the-Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road (Rte 100 & Rte 141). Graveside services will follow. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6-8 pm, on Friday, March 7, at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike. The rosary will be recited at 7:45 p.m.
