Denton Journal, 30 June 1900
Mrs. Sarah Jane Garey, wife of Capt. Matthew Garey, died very suddenly at the home of her brother, Mr. Jesse P. Warren, near Greensborough, on Sunday morning last, in the sixty-sixth year of her age. With her husband and several relatives, Mrs. Garey had gone over to her brother's to spend the day. Apparently she was enjoying good health. Only the day before she was in Denton, and called on a number of her friends. Shortly after her arrival at Mr. Warren's, she while looking at the flowers about the place, was seized with heart affection and went into the house, expiring, evidently without pain, while sitting in a chair. Nine children--Wm. H., George, Reuben, Owen C., Robert L., John W., Matthew Jr., and Rix R., and Miss Jennie--are with the father bereaved. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. Church in this place, the Rev. J. S. Wickline conducting the services, in which he pointed out the beauty and supreme comfort of a godly life as was illustrated by the departed. Mrs. Garey was a Methodist, and an exemplar of its teachings. The remains were interred in Denton cemetery, whither many friends gathered to pay their respects. Six sons, William H., George, Reuben, Owen C., Matthew Jr., and John W. were pall-bearers.
