Herbert Leroy Gardner, 81, of Stafford County passed away at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 with his loving family by his side.

Leroy served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952. He was in charge of the first communications office in Stafford County. He later served as the Executive Director of the Rappahannock Emergency Medical Services (REMS council) for 22 years. In 1972, and and several others started the first Volunteer Rescue Squad in Stafford County where he served as EMT, Cardiac Tech, and EMT Instructor for the State of Virginia.
Leroy was a Charter & Life member of Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad and a Life member of the Stafford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the American Legion Post 290, Stafford and the Masonic Lodge 279 A.F. & A.M., Stafford.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Hulbert and Betty Gardner; son, Curtis Blake Gardner; brother Floyd Gardner; and brother-in-law Michael Null.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Virginia; daughter Lucy Griffith (Vic); son Frank Gardner (Mary Ann);brother Billy Gardner (Mary Jane); sister Lois Brewer (Jerry);four sisters-in-law Pat Gardner, Patsy McNelis, Sandra Peake (Zeke) and Sally Carter; brother-in-law Mere Null (Olga); seven grandchildren Chris Hlavacik, Tara Surles, Amy Maroney, Jon Gardner, Curtis Griffith, Brian Gardner and Ian Gardner; seven great-grandchildren Benjamin,Stephen,Christian,Caitlin,Jacob,Caroline and Ave Grace and his "furry" friend, Bossy.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Stafford Volunteer Fire Department.

Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery.
