Delmer (Del, Bug) Gardiner died in St. James Healthcare on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007.

His wife of 57 years, Kay, their four children and several grandchildren were at his side.

Del was born in Arlee on July 22, 1931, to George and Estella Gardiner. He was raised between the family ranch in Arlee and in East Butte.

On Jan. 21, 1952, Delmer married Kathryn (Kay) Krall in Butte. Del was just beginning his service in the Marine Corps and left immediately after to serve his country. Shortly after his leaving, Kay joined Del and they began their family and their future together. Del served in the military from Jan. 24, 1952, to Jan. 23, 1954. While in the Marine Corps, Del was recognized for his expertise in marksmanship and received certification from GM for his auto and track vehicle mechanics.

After his service with the Marines he returned home to Butte with his wife and young son, where he went to work for Paul Bartch Wrecking as an apprentice mechanic. He then worked for Pittsburgh Glass before starting work with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. as a truck driver in the Berkeley Pit, from which he retired in January 1976.

Del's favorite memories were the years in Arlee and with his horse "Lightening." He shared many happy memories with family and friends about his years on the ranch in Arlee and unending hunting stories. He was never happier than when he was working with a horse or spending time in the mountains, whether it was a family camping trip or hunting with his sons, sons-in-law, grandsons or friends. Del loved auto mechanics and spent many hours teaching his sons and grandson Alex about cars. Del held a special place in his heart for his grandson Joey, with whom he spent many hours in playful arguments that created that special bond between them. Joey will especially miss the hours he spent with his grandpa.

Dad will be remembered for his engaging theatrical storytelling, his love for his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Delmer was preceded in death by his young son, George; mother, Estella; father, George; stepfather and best friend, Joe Sanders; sister, Fern Steiner; and brother, Kenny Gardiner.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; children, Cathy (Marc) Redfern, Tim (Theresa) Gardiner, David Gardiner and Cheryl Moralez; grandchildren and their children, Amanda Redfern and Alex Redfern, Mathew (Julia) Gardiner and their children, Brandon and Emma, Elizabeth Gardiner and her children, Joshua, Nathan and Bridgett, Megan (Chris) Kowitz and their daughter, Kinsley, Timothy Gardiner and Tyler Gardiner, Stacy Mitchum her children, Cameron and Carmen, Kelly Gardiner and her daughter, Emily, Andrew Gardiner, Angela (Shawn) Harrison and their children Scott and Trenton, Joey Moralez; numerous nieces and nephews as well as his close friend, Doug Griffen.
