Char Rae Gardiner, 51, of Helena, died peacefully at home Sunday morning Feb. 20, 2005, of breast cancer. Char was born Oct. 13, 1953, in Great Falls to Dick and Norma Sangray. She grew up in Brady and graduated from Brady High School. In 1971 she married Tom Bishop. Together they had two beautiful children, Jennifer and Nathan.
In 1975 they moved to Helena. Char worked for IBM in Helena for 17 years, and in 1982 she married Dick Gardiner and with that marriage she gained a daughter, Heather, and a son, David. They had a wonderful marriage of over 22 years.
Char lived an active and passionate life with her main passion being her children and her grandchildren. After being diagnosed herself with cancer, she became more aware of the fears and needs of others with breast cancer. She felt they were in a battle together and together they would fight it. She and her husband began "Golf To Find A Cure" in 1999, which created a fund to help ladies in and around Helena. Helping others was "Her Medicine."
Char is survived by her parents, Dick and Norma Sangray of East Glacier; her husband Dick Gardiner; and four children: Heather Gardiner of Lakewood Wash.; Jennifer Sparrow and her husband Richard of Helena; David Gardiner of Boulder, Colo.; and Nathan Bishop and his wife Bree of Helena. She is also survived by a sister, Renee and her husband Gerhardt and their children: Rich and Natasha Simonsen; Josh, Zack and Chelsey of Carmichael, Calif.; and her brother Rich Sangray and wife Linda and their two daughters, Cassie and Trista of Great Falls; and her special grandchildren: Kase and Jaden Sparrow and TylerAnn Bishop. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Hazel Gardiner of Elcerrito, Calif.; sister-in-law Marty Gardiner of Kensington, Calif.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and many treasured friends. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law Albert Gardiner and brother-in-law Don Gardiner.
The memories of her will be cherished forever. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Helena, 1400 Stuart St. Memorials in Char's name are suggested to "Golf To Find A Cure", 2010 Sweetgrass Road, Helena, MT 59601.
