Jean Gardiner, caring and beloved sister and aunt, died on Sunday, November 2, 2008 of Cancer in Glendale, Arizona.
Born May 1, 1940 to Harold Birk and Erma Young Gardiner in Salt Lake City, the second of ten children. As the eldest daughter, Jean accepted responsibility and learned to work hard. Although she never had children of her own, Jean often cared for her siblings and later joked that she had already reared her family.
A talented pianist, Jean loved music and accompanied many performers, including the East High School A Cappella and LDSSA groups. She graduated from the University of Utah in dietetics and later earned an MBA. She worked as a dietitian at Stanford (Palo Alto, CA), King County (WA) and Mt. Sinai (NY) medical centers. For more than 20 years she held executive positions in a New Jersey business which designed nutrition plans for hospital special needs units. She retired to Arizona, living in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Jean was a compassionate person who befriended many, including those who had few other friends or were experiencing difficulties. She had a big heart and a listening ear. Jean was known for her independence, generosity, and sense of humor. Even after a heart malfunction eight years ago resulted in brain impairment, Jean's buoyant spirit and quick wit continued to cheer her caregivers. She communicated volumes with her eyes without her saying a word. She was a member of the LDS Church.
Survived by brothers and sisters: Mark (Sherry), Ashton, ID; Paul (Martha), Art (Jolene), and Sue (David) Wolfgramm, all Bountiful; Erma (Gordon) Winter, Holladay; Louise (Cole) Durham, Provo; Marcia, San Francisco, CA.; sister-in-law Janet, Layton; many nieces and nephews.
