Emma G. Chavez (lovingly called Mom and Nonnie) was called home to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. She passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at the Heritage Assisted Living.

Emma was born on November 29, 1928 to Isaac C. Garcia and Victoria M. Garcia in Dona Ana, NM. She and her older sister, Angelina, helped raise their six younger siblings.

Emma graduated at the top of her class at Las Cruces Union High in May 1947. She attended New Mexico Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and Montgomery County Community College. She worked for C. B. Smith Construction Company for 20 years. Emma and her family lived in Caracas, Venezuela and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the 1960's and then Rockville, Maryland in the 1970's. Along with her four sisters, Emma was co-owner and co-manager of Victoria's Lounge. Though she retired from working at Victoria's in 2008, she adamantly attended her Happy Hours every Friday and Sunday afternoon.
Emma's greatest passion was for our Lord Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church for decades. She truly had special times with all her family and friends from all the different periods in her life and continued making new friends till her end. Nonnie loved a good party and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, and friends. She loved having three-hour lunches with her best friends, Becky Mesa, Concha Contreras, Corrie Montoya, and Esther Lucero at Fat Eddie's.

Special thanks to Emma's special friend, and hairdresser, Dolores Villalobos (Pickle) for her kindness, prayers and laughter. Special thanks to her friends Alaina Johnson, Jay Robb, care-givers and staff at the Heritage Assisted Living and Hospice, who also became close members of our family.
Emma loved life and served as the family's matriarch after her mother passed away in 1988. She LOVES to laugh heartily! Even when she became ill, she maintained a strong sense of humor. She especially loved good music and dancing. Emma had a blessed life and shared her precious gifts with all who knew her.

Emma is survived by her children, Frieda M. Chavez (companion Joe D. Valdez), Isaac V. Chavez (wife Minerva A. Chavez), Christina Chavez Kelley (husband Michael G. Kelley), and Vivian M. Frietze (husband O. Leonard Frietze); her sisters, Angelina M. Lucero, Elodia M. Garcia, Mary Jane Garcia, and Yolanda M. Gonzales (husband Mike Gonzales), her brother Jerry M. Garcia (wife Erlinda C. Garcia); eight grandchildren, John L. Breeden, Barbie Breeden, Mark Diaz, Joaquin S. Chavez, Bianca M. Chavez, Michaela Kelley, (My) Jessie Nowell, and Dominik V. Frietze; and three great-grandchildren, Derek Diego Breeden, Emma Bianca Breeden (Nonnie's namesake), and Lucas Diaz. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Reymundo "Sonny" Garcia and Leroy M. Garcia.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 9, 2010 from 2 PM to 4 PM in Baca's Funeral Chapels. Emma's Prayer Vigil will be recited by Reverend Ray Flores at 7 PM April 9, 2010 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor John E. Anderson on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 2 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, where Emma will be laid to rest.

Serving as casket bearers will be John Breeden, Joaquin Chavez, Joe Fajardo, Isaac P. Garcia, Joe Garcia, Gabriel Gonzales, Michael Gonzales, and Jessie Nowell. Honorary bearers will be Derek Breeden, Mark Diaz, Richard Fajardo, Raymond Fajardo, Jerry Garcia, Jr., Ray Garcia, David Garcia, and Phil Gonzales.
