Lewis Deweese Gant was born December 28, 1819 in Cedar Grove, Franklin County, Indiana. He was the son of Giles and Nancy Smith Gant. He grew up in the Brookville area of Franklin county where his father and grandfather came as pioneers in 1809. His father, Judge Giles Gant was a prominent figure in the county and state having served as an Associate Judge on the Circuit Court and a term as state senator.
Lewis D. Gant married Susanna Brackney on November 12, 1839. Sometime prior to 1860, Lewis, Susanna and family moved to Jennings County, Indiana. He was a farmer and they lived in the Geneva area.
Lewis and Susanna had four children: Giles (1842-1906); Martha (1845-1906); William Monroe (1848-1923) and Ida Ora (1862-1915).
Lewis was widowed in 1895. He married Amanda Demit Ricketts on May 7, 1896 in Decatur County, Indiana. Lewis Deweese Gant died February 22, 1904 in Jennings County, Indiana at the age of 84 years, 1 month, 25 days.
