Giles Gant was born August 22, 1842 in Franklin County, Indiana. He was the son of Lewis Deweese and Susanna Brackney Gant. Giles was raised for most of his early life in Franklin County, Indiana. His parents moved to Jennings County, Indiana prior to the start of the Civil War.
Giles enlisted August 19,1862 in Co I, 68th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Giles transferred to Co. A. 2nd Battalion, 19th US Infantry on December 10, 1862. He held the rank of Sergeant. He mustered out August 28, 1865.
After the war, Giles Gant married Mary Ellen Chatten on February 8, 1866 in Decatur County, Indiana. Giles and Mary Ellen Gant had had at least five children: Elmer Eugene (1868-1946); Lurinda J. (1870-1871); Isophine (1874-1913); Ellie (1876-1953); Betrix Pearl (1879-1954).
Giles was widowed and remarried August 6, 1884 to Mary Jane Hiner, in Decatur County, Indiana. Giles applied for pension benefits in January 12, 1880 for disability.
Giles Gant died February 17, 1906 in Jennings County Indiana.
