Dave was born in Elkhart, TX to Christopher Columbus "Lum" and Maggie Ann Gammage. He is buried beside them. He first married Geraldine Fryar who preceded him in death on 27 June 1947. She is buried in Garden of Memories.
He enlisted in the Navy in October 1944 and trained at San Diego, CA and San Francisco, CA. He served on Pearl Harbor. He also served in the Army. Dave and his brother, Harry Lee Gammage, drowned in the Trinity River near Hall's Bluff in Houston Co, TX after they fell from the boat while adjusting their fishing nets. He was self-employed at the time of his death. Previously he was employed by Brown & Root. He was survived by his second wife, Billie Morris Gammage of Elkhart; two sons, Carl Arlon and Paul Alan Gammage, and one daughter, Debbie Ann Gammage, all of Elkhart; two brother, Charlie Gammage of Houston and Clyde Gammage of Morgan City, Louisiana; and three sisters, Ellna McClinton of Kennard, Nellie Burrows and Winnie Maris, both of Houston.
His obituary appeared in the Palestine (TX) Herald-Press, Tuesday, 24 February 1958.
