John Christian Gambold was born to Sophia Elizabeth (went by Betsy) Gambold (1788-1854). Sophia later married Friedrich William Hertel (Hartel) (1782-1824) on 12 Feb 1810 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. John was raised by a neighboring family.

John married Anna (went by Nancy) Swaim (1807-1856) on 19 Feb 1828 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. In 1834 the family moved to Hendricks County, Indiana. John and Nancy were the parents of ten children, of whom eight are known, four boys and four girls:

1. Jesse Franklin Gambold (1829-1829)
2. Levi Sanford Gambold (1830-1913)
3. Eri Augustus Gambold (1832-1901)
4. Louisa Catherine Gambold Wright Lakin (1834-1923)
5. Mary Jane Gambold Smith (1837-???)
6. Josephus Gambold (1839-1917)
7. Narcissa E. (1842-1859)
8. Cynthia Ann Gambold Knapp Ridpath (1846-1929)

John was a "mechanic" who designed and built waterworks and mills. In 1856 the family set out to move to Minnesota, but Nancy died by the roadside in Delaware County, Iowa and it is not known where she is buried. The family contined to Minnesota where they lived for three years before returning to Indiana.
