Birth: 1833
New York, USA
Death: Apr. 29, 1886
Auckland, New Zealand

Enlisted in the Union Army, November 29, 1861, as 1st lieutenant in company G, 11th New York Cavalry, and was promoted to captain, and transferred to company H, April 23, 1862, where he assumed command of the company on the same date. Sometime in 1862 he married his wife, Ella, and at least three children were a result of their union. On March 26, 1864, he was promoted to major, and mustered out more than a year later, at Memphis, Tennessee, on April 22, 1865. During his service he had been in several engagements with his regiment. After the war Gamble took employment as agent with steamship companies in New York and later in California, where he was closely connected with the New Zealand trade. Shortly before his death of apoplexy, in 1886, he had assumed his new duties as vice consul in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. At the time of his death, he was a Master of Masonic Lodge Remeura, E.C., and his funeral was conducted by that organisation. After his death his wife remained in New Zealand, and died at Auckland in September, 1903. Gamble is the highest ranked military officer of the American Civil War, known to be buried in New Zealand.
