Death: Mar. 7, 2006

AUGUSTA - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Ella Sylvia (Gallant) Baker, at 96. Ella passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at Glenridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Augusta, where she had resided for the past two years.

She was born in Madison on April 15, 1909, the daughter of Joseph A. and Sylvia (LeBlanc) Gallant. She was educated in Madison schools, and graduated from Madison High School in 1927.

Ella married Romeo J. Baker in 1930, and they made their home on Arnold's Lane in Anson ("Skunk Hollow"). They shared 55 years of happy life together until Romeo's passing in 1985.

She also found time to be a local correspondent, reporting on news from the community, for the Waterville Morning Sentinel from 1945 until 1975, and for the Bangor Daily News for several years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Romeo; and all of her brothers and sisters, Joseph, Prosper, John, Martin, Beatrice, Mary, Isabelle "Pete," and Clarice.

She is survived by her four sons and their wives, Ernest and Anne Baker of Winslow, Joseph and Renee Baker of Windsor Locks, Conn., Martin and Michelle Baker of Seabrook, Texas, and Eugene and Martha Baker of Princeton, N.J. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Sandy St. John, Sharley Benefield, Lisa Hachey, Joyce Selesky, Amos Baker, John Baker, Lana Poulliot, Michelle Baker and Julie Baker; and by eight great-grandchildren, Jason St. John, Matthew Benefield, Margaret Selesky, Caroline Selesky, Matthew Poulliot, Christopher Poulliot, Elizabeth Baker and John Baker. Ella is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her dear friends and neighbors, Terry and Cindy Petley of Anson. Terry was like a son to Ella. Terry's and Cindy's assistance allowed Ella to remain in her home as long as possible.

Interment will be later in the spring at Father Rasle Cemetery in Madison. (Morning Sentinel 3/9/2006)
