Mary Gale Tobin was born November 27, 1845 to Oregon Provisional Governor Joseph Gale (1843-1844) and his wife Eliza Gale, a daughter of Nez Perce Old Chief Joseph, at the Gale homestead on Gales Creek, in Tuality County, Oregon.
Mary moved with her parents, Joseph and Eliza Gale, to California In 1848 where her father mined for gold as well as acquired land at Pueblo de San Jose in Santa Clara County. The Gale family next moved to the mouth of Tejon Canyon where Joseph Gale contracted services to Fort Tejon. In 1859 Mary Gale assisted her parents in managing the Butterfield Stage Station and Ferry at Gordon's Ferry (now Bakersfield, CA) until the Gales moved to Walla Walla, Washington. In 1867 the Gales settled in Eagle Valley, Oregon where Mary looked after her mother and younger sisters and assisted her father with his Postal duties and the family's truck garden enterprise.
After the death of her father in 1881, Mary was appointed Administratrix of his estate and for a short time held the position of acting postmaster in the Gale home. She lived with her sister Clara at the Gale's homestead until her marriage to W. H. Tobin.
On January 2, 1883 Mary Gale and Warren Henry (Bill) Tobin, a miner and homesteader, were married by Justice of the Peace, L. L. Holcomb in the home of Clara Gale in New Bridge, Oregon.
Mary Gale Tobin and her husband mined and ranched until her death from diphtheria on January 29, 1894. Mary Gale Tobin was laid to rest on January 30, 1894 near the grave of her father, Joseph Gale in the Eagle Valley Cemetery. Mary's husband Warren Henry Tobin ( July 1831- Jan.1919) rests beside her.
