He attended Nelson County High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed at the Lynchburg Health Department and was a faithful member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, Massies Mill.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Hopsie Crawford Gaines; a son, Derek Gaines; and a daughter, Jamonika Gaines of Madison Heights; six brothers, Elmo (Florence) Gaines, Gary (Kim) Gaines of Madison Heights, James (Ruth) Gaines, Joseph (Paula) Gaines, Lloyd Gaines, Roseland, and Dorange (Jamie) Gaines of Highland Park, N.J.; seven sisters, Juliette Carter, Washington, D.C., Marilyn (James) Cashwell of Oxen Hill, Md., Pauline (John) Martin of Shipman, Phyllis (Robert) Parrish of Cincinnati, Ohio, Shirley Allen and Machalle (Larry) Tucker of Amherst, and Ronnie (Fernando) Iniesta of Arrington. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Rueben and Cora Crawford of Washington, D.C.; three sisters-in-law, Dora (Robert) Ricks, Cora (Jimmy) Harris of Washington D.C., and Alice Gaines of Madison Heights; four brother-in-law, James Jones, Ray (Wilhelmina) Jones, Reuben Crawford, and Robert (Yvonne) Crawford, all of Washington, D.C.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rainard Gaines.
Michael will be remembered by all his family and friends as a wonderful father, great cook and kind friend.
A home going service will be held at Oak Hill Baptist Church, Massies Mill, Saturday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. L. Keith Otey officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday.
