Jefferson Jones Gaines was the son of Francis Alexander Gaines and Didama Hailey Gaines.

His last wife was Rhoda Emily Walters - married on July 22, 1903.

Sallie and Rhoda were sisters, and they were the daughters of Abraham Walters and Margaret Maryan Salmons Walters.
