"Please give this note to Emily and tell her it was all for the best. Give mama and papa a kiss for me. Tell them I am tired of living.

Goodbye forever, Mamie"

Despondent after only one year of marriage to her husband, Otto Arkenau, Mamie shot herself in the temple and died instantly.

Mamie was the daughter of German immigrants Christian Gahr and his wife, Gottliebe Bartel. Born in about 1884 in Trenton, New Jersey, Mamie was only 19 years old at the time of her death. She married Otto Arkenau on April 2, 1903 at her sister's house on Coney Island. (Certificate #2325)

According to news reports, the marriage was troubled from the start. After about 6 months, Mamie moved back to Trenton to live with her parents. Shortly before her death, Mamie returned to Coney Island. Unfortunately, her unhappiness with her marriage continued. She committed suicide in the parlor of her home at the Oriole Hotel and Bathing Pavilion. The Oriole was owned and/or managed by Mamie's husband's family and was located at the foot of Tilyou's Walk.

Mamie's body was brought back to Trenton and buried in Riverview Cemetery on April 6, 1904.

Mamie's grave is unmarked.
