Staff Sgt. Greg P. Gagarin of Los Angeles moved from Candon Philippines to the United States when he was 10 where he graduated from John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, California, and enlisted in the Army in 1988. Greg may have been raised in Los Angeles, but he never forgot his Filipino roots. He was planning to retire on his military pension in several years and build a home in the Philippines, where he and his wife could raise their two children. He valued his family and always wanted to do what was best for them. He is survived by his father, a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant, wife, two children, brothers and a sister. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the fourth highest U.S. military award for gallantry in action, as well as the Purple Heart medal. Greg was buried in hometown of Candon, Philippines in northern Illocos Sur province with full military honors. Candon city public cemetery. He was 38.
