Alfred Gadsden 77, of Lady's Island, and widower of Christine Gadsden, died Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Funeral: 12 Noon Friday, January 6th, 2012 at Friendship Baptist Church, Coosaw Island. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaufort National Cemetery.The Body will repose at the Church from 11:00 AM until the hour of services, there will be no viewing after the eulogy.

Alfred Gadsden was born August 10, 1934 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, a son of the late Melvin Gadsden, Sr. and the late Emily Smith Gadsden.

Alfred was educated in the Beaufort County School System. He served in the United States Army for four years. After the completion of his military duties, he resided in Elizabeth, New Jersey where he worked in Construction as a Professional Carpenter for many years.

He was baptized at New Bethel Baptist Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey where he served faithfully for many years. He loved singing and was a member of the Mighty Stars of Harmony gospel group.

Later, he met and married the former Christine Taylor, and of that union five children were born. After retirement, he returned to Beaufort, South Carolina where he joined the Friendship Baptist Church on Coosaw Island.

Alfred loved making people happy, he enjoyed having fun. He was the owner/ operator of "Little Harlem" where people came from all over and were the recipients of his hospitality and fun loving happy ways.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Christine; two sons, Darrell and Alfred, Jr.; three siblings, Johnnie Mae, Agnes and Melvin, Jr.

Alfred leaves to cherish his memory his children, namely a devoted daughter, Selena Link (John) of Lady's Island and Keena Pompey (Bill) of Rahway, NJ; two sons, Donald Greene (Katie) of Elizabeth, NJ and Leonard Gadsden of Newark, NJ; fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Charlene Manigault of Savannah, GA and Earlene Ladson (Dea. Marvin) of St. Helena Island, SC; two brothers, Julius Gadsden (Florence) of Hillside, NJ and Preston Gadsden (Phyllis) of Somerset, NJ; two aunts, Geneva Wilson of Lady's Island, SC and Marie Smith of Savannah, GA; three sisters-in-law, Evelena Gadsden of Lady's Island, Margaret Blackwell and Lillian Hamilton both of Elizabeth, NJ; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
