Emma Jean Fowler Gadd, age 83, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2010 in her home while surrounded by her family. She conducted her life with dignity, always faithful to her religious convictions. Her life reflected her abiding love for her Father in Heaven and her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Emma Jean was born May 21, 1926 in Goshen, Utah to James Talbert Fowler and Emma Price Burraston. She graduated from Payson High School and later as a Registered Nurse from the LDS Hospital School of Nursing.

She met Joseph Walter Gadd on a blind date, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 24, 1948. They moved to Bountiful in 1951 and raised their family there. She and Walt are the proud parents of four children: Sharon (James) Whitaker, Cathy (Jim) Williams, Steven (Lesli) Gadd, and Suzanne (Brad) Gibson. Her twenty-one grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren appreciate her thoughtfulness and look to her as an example. They know she loved and cared deeply for them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt, her one sister, Donna Marie Hansen, and her three brothers, Max, Carl, and Dell Roy Fowler.

Emma Jean was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she served with faithful dedication in many capacities within the Relief Society, the Young Women, and the Sunday School organizations. She and her beloved Walt served as temple workers at the Bountiful Temple, and they served as volunteer coordinators of the Bountiful Temple dedication. They also completed a two-year mission at the St. George Historical Sites and Visitor Center.

Jean was an outstanding example of Christ-like service. She emulated His example in her unfailing and devoted service to everyone she met without a thought for her own needs. She was the first to extend a hand of friendship, to lend a listening ear, or to minister to anyone in need. She could always be found on a neighbor's doorstep delivering a hot casserole or a loaf of bread.

Because she was a Registered Nurse, she also became the neighborhood nurse. She mended many skinned knees, gave allergy shots, and sat at the bedside of many friends when they were sick or in need of comfort. Everyone who knew Emma Jean Gadd also knew they could call her day or night and she would come to their aid.

She was very involved in a variety of civic activities including the Red Ribbon Campaign, the PTA, the Right to Life movement, and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, as well as local literary clubs and study groups. But her main focus was to support Walt and their family. She traveled to performances, games, graduations, and activities to support children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren wherever they lived - whether near or far away. Though she will be greatly missed, she left her family a legacy of love, family togetherness, and service.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. in the Mueller Park Stake Center, 1800 East Mueller Park Road, Bountiful. Friends and family may call on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, and Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Stake Center prior to the services.
Interment will be in the Bountiful Memorial Park Cemetery.
