Richard Roy Grass
Richard Roy Grass 1924 - 2006 Born June 20, 1924 in Peoria, Illinois and died in Bakersfield, California June 15, 2006, of natural causes. Only child of Leroy E. Grass and Ida E. Grass; survived by his son, Roger R. Grass. Married Virginia R. Imes, December 17, 1948, in Portland, Oregon. Richard grew up in Idaho and graduated from Boise High School in 1941. At age nineteen he became a special agent in the United States Secret Service. He served in that capacity throughout World War II and acted as a bodyguard for Presidents Roosevelt and Truman. Richard graduated from Lewis and Clark College in 1949, with honors. He then worked for many years as an accounting supervisor on Montgomery Street in San Francisco. In 1964 he earned an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated second in his class. Richard then taught business administration and economics at Bakersfield College for a quarter-century. He loved teaching. He had the good sense and good fortune to find a career that perfectly suited his talents and interests. He was also a real estate broker and an Enrolled Agent qualified to represent taxpayers in IRS proceedings. Richard had many close friends throughout his long life. He treasured his friendships with faculty colleagues. He also served as president of several organizations, including the Oregon Christian Youth Association, a credit union in the Bay Area, and the Bakersfield College Faculty Association. Richard had many interests outside of his work. He participated extensively in music during his youth, played trumpet in dance bands, and loved music -- particularly swing jazz, circus songs and John Philip Sousa marches --- throughout his life. He enjoyed sailing in the Bay Area and camping in the Rocky Mountains. Richard read omnivorously and frequented many different libraries throughout his life, starting with the Library of Congress during the war. He loved the sea and during retirement especially enjoyed his trips to Pearl Harbor, Annapolis, and Marblehead, Mass. He had a boundless curiosity about people and the world around him. Richard could talk knowledgably about a whole host of subjects: fire trucks, knives, circuses, the San Francisco 49ers, real estate economics, and many, many other topics. In his last weeks, when Richard was severely incapacitated, he read books about mining in Idaho and flying in Alaska. In his youth he won prizes in activities as diverse as marksmanship, golf, and mental arithmetic. He faced his final illnesses with courage and equanimity. He will be interred in Hillcrest Memorial Park, near several of his old friends from Bakersfield College. A memorial service will be scheduled later this year. Richard Grass: devoted teacher, beloved father
