SAD DEATH OF A LITTLE BOY

A sad death is reported from Washington Township. Balam Fulford, the bright 15-year-old son of Thomas Fulford, was killed Friday (August 21, 1891) by gas in a well. The particulars are unusually sad. The little fellow with his companion, a son of John Wenrick, were playing about the premises of Mr. Wenrick while the men were engaged in digging a well. The well was about 20 feet deep, and it was necessary to blast to tear out the rock. A blast was put in position and exploded, when the two boys, who were playing a short distance away, bantered each other as to who could get to the well first and get down into it. The Fulford boy outran his companion, and the men who were at the top of the well let him down by means of a rope. He was hardly to the bottom when he gave a scream and jumped for the rope again. He was brought to the surface in an instance and laid upon the ground. He only breathed a few times and died before the men realized the situation. All efforts to restore him were fruitless. He had been poisoned by the smoke and gas from the powder. His hands held with such firmness to the rope that it was almost impossible to loose them.

Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Republican Progress, August 26, 1891, p. 3.

A 15-year-old son of Thomas Fulford of Washington Twp., met with sudden death last Thursday (August 20, 1891). A well was being dug on Wenrick's farm; Wenrick and another man had set off a blast in the well and gone away. Young Fulford and another boy, immediately after the blast exploded, ran to the well and Fulford, reaching the well first, went down the rope. After he got down, he cried out to those above that he was choking and, grasping the rope, he was brought to the surface. He gasped several times after reaching the top and expired.
