BEAUFORT — Speed was a contributing factor in a one-car wreck that killed two people Sunday in Carteret County, the Highway Patrol said.
Rachel F. Lewis, 30, and Davin M. Fulford, 34, both of Beaufort, died as a result of the wreck that occurred about 7 a.m. on Merrimon Road north of Beaufort, said Trooper Marvin Shadday.
Lewis was driving a 1993 Toyota Corolla north on Merrimon Road at a high rate of speed when the car crossed the centerline, went off the road to the left, struck a tree and overturned in the ditch. The car was traveling an estimated 80 mph in a 55 mph zone, Shadday said.
Neither the driver nor passenger was wearing a seat belt. Fulford was partially ejected and trapped under the car, highway patrol said.
Lewis died at the scene and Fulford was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital, where he died later that day, Shadday said.
A graveside service for Fulford will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Red Hill Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Misty Fulford of Newport; mother, Rhonda Willis of Beaufort; father, Julian Morris of Atlantic; and sisters, Courtney Ross of Greenville, Charlotte Wade, Lesle Tickle and Stephanie Deaner, all of Beaufort.
Funeral information was not available for Lewis.

Officials say a pregnant woman and a man are dead after their car ran off the road in Carteret County and slammed into a tree about 7:00 a.m. Sunday.
The Highway Patrol says the driver was 30-year-old Rachel Lewis and the passenger was 34-year-old Davin Fulford.
Troopers say Lewis was speeding on Merrimon Road about 10 miles north of Beaufort, when her Toyota Corolla ran off the road, hit a tree, and flipped over.
Troopers say neither was wearing a seat belt. Highway Patrol says Lewis died at the scene and Fulford was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where he died.
Troopers say Lewis' mother told them her daughter was several months pregnant.
They also confirm that several years ago, Fulford was driving a vehicle that crashed in Carteret County. They tell WITN Fulford's baby son was killed in the crash and Fulford was convicted of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
