Anna Marie Chaumont, born Fricker, wife of Joseph Chaumont, a Savoyard, died November 10, 1765, seven days after childbirth, her infant dying at birth or rather perishing through unkillful handling, buried in the Catholic graveyard at Reading, November 11, 1765." ("MBSC" page 98) also ("MBSC", page 61)

Please note: She is buried at the Catholic Graveyard in Reading but recorded death was recorded here at this Mission of Goshenhoppen.

Update note: She was buried there on the east side of Duke Street, now Seventh Street, in the middle of the block between today's Franklin and Chestnut Streets, then Richard and Hamilton Streets. The South Fifth Street or 111 South Seventh Street property served the needs of the congregation until 1844, when a property on South Fifth Street was purchased for a new and larger church. The new St. Peter's church was dedicated in 1846, and the old property on Seventh Street sold. The remains of those interred in the old cemetery were removed to a new location on Neversink Mountain. In collaboration with Rev. Monsignor Charles L. Allwein Pastor-Emeritus 1976Anna Maria Fricker was born in Germany (Many on ancestry say: Germany, Switzerland, but we don't know where she was born in Germany). Anna Maria was the daughter of Charles Gallus Fricker 1700 – 1755 and Susanna Sutterrean Fricker 1707 – . Anna married Joseph Chaumonte (1723-1786) in 1751 in Bern, Berks, Pennsylvania.

Joseph Chaumonte was born in St Julien, Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France on Nov. 17, 1723. His dad was Jean-Francois Chaumontet (1682-1747) who was born in Chaumontet, Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France. His mom was Anne Claudine Chappet Chaumonte (1688-1728) who was also born at Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France. When Joseph Chaumonte came over to the USA, the last name changed to "Shomo".

Joseph and Anna Maria Chaumont Shomo had 4 sons: John Shomo (1752-1836) , Bernard Shomo (1753-1793), Anthony Shomo (1756-1812) and Joseph S. Shomo (1759-1797). Anna Maria died right after giving birth to this couple's 5th child. This infant also died. Joseph and his sons (John & Anthony) fought in the Revolutionary War.

We have a lot of information about Anna Maria's death in church records we found on the Internet. History of St. Peter, the first Catholic Church in Reading, PA tells that the first death record is that of Anna Maria Chaumont, "buried in Catholic graveyard. Reading, November 11, 1765." Joseph died in March, 1786 at Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA.

Members of this church listed the Fricker family. Reading was founded in 1748 by Thomas and Richard Penn (sons of William Penn). In 1752 a modest chapel was built on the east side of Duke Street (lot number 821), now Seventh Street, between Franklin and Chestnut Streets, just opposite the site of the old Franklin Street Railroad Station owned by the Reading Railroad. Deed Book No. 29, p. 417. One of the trustees was: Joseph Obold. Joseph was the father-in-law of Joseph and Anna Maria Chaumontet/Shomo's son, Anthony. The members of the original congregation were Germans; some of these were of mixed French ancestry, having come from Alsace and Lorraine. Anthony must have met his wife, Elizabeth Rebecca Obold in this church, and they must have known each other all of their lives. http://www.goreadingberks.com/religion/catholicfaith/history/stpeters.php

The words to this song:
ANNA MARIE

Tonight while the snowflakes are falling
Here in my dreams I can see
The white cherry blossoms of Chaumont
Where I walked with Anna Marie

Anna Marie, Anna Marie. my heart remembers and sighs
C'est vous, c'est vous. m'aimez beaucoup.
I miss you Anna Marie

My love was pledged to another
But I knew as I crossed the sea
That I'd never love any other
As I love my Anna Marie

Anna Marie, Anna Marie. my heart remembers and sighs
C'est vous, c'est vous, m'aimez beaucoup.
I miss you Anna Marie

I miss you Anna Marie
