Wichita Eagle, Thursday, January 8, 2009

Frensley, Betty, 88, of Wichita, Kansas, died January 4, 2009. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and survived by her son, Dr. William R. and daughter-in-law Susan of Richardson, Texas; grandsons John and Paul; sister, Bessie Sue Manz of Richmond, Virginia; and seven nieces and nephews. Betty was born December 12, 1920 in Walters, Oklahoma, though the family soon moved to nearby Duncan. Her parents were Herbert J. and Susan Brown. Her elder sister, Emma Winifred, died in 1932. Betty graduated from Duncan High School in 1938, attended Oklahoma College for Women and Duncan Junior College, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Chemistry in 1943. During World War II, she worked for Alcoa in Kansas City, Missouri, and Halliburton in Duncan. She married Robert W. Frensley of Duncan June 16, 1946, and returned to the University of Oklahoma to study home economics while he completed his degree in geology. Robert and Betty moved to Wichita in 1948. For the next twenty years she devoted herself to family life, and in 1969 she started taking classes at Wichita State University, primarily in mathematics. She continued taking classes through 1985, and she served as a teaching assistant and instructor at WSU in the mid 1970s. The family would like to express our thanks to Esther Addison for her devotion to Betty during her final years. Viewing: 1-8 Friday at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca. Service: 10:00 am Saturday, January 10, 2009, at East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 E. Douglas.
