Marguerite Hargrove Freeland, 87, Topeka, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Freeland taught school in Atchison and Jackson counties for five years. She also was involved in the state and national agricultural organizations for 26 years and was active in the Kansas State Fair committee for reception of distinguished guests. She received an award of appreciation from the Fair Board for 25 years of service to the fair.
She was born Feb. 28, 1915, near Effingham, the daughter of Robert Lee and Lavina Hamner Hargrove. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School and attended Kansas State University. She presented a daily inspirational radio program of commentary, poetry and interpretation on KSAC radio in Manhattan in 1934 and 1935.
Mrs. Freeland was a member of the Kansas Cow Bells and served many years on the group's scholarship committee. She also was a member of the Grange and Kansas Farm Bureau and the First Christian Church in Topeka.
She married Roy Freeland on Dec. 25, 1937. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, Kent Freeland, San Diego; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel, 2843 S.E. Minnesota Ave. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Effingham. Mrs. Freeland will lie in state after noon Tuesday at the funeral chapel where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
