The Press Democrat, Santa Rosa, CA - February 14, 1997:

Edwin Freeland, a Sonoma County resident for more than 50 years, died Feb. 5 at his Santa Rosa home of cancer. He was 71. He was born in Greeley, Colo. He lived with his grandparents in Imperial, Neb., before moving to California. He then lived in San Jose and San Francisco before moving to Santa Rosa in 1939. He attended Todd School, Santa Rosa High School and Santa Rosa Junior College. Freeland served as an Army paratrooper during World War II. He fought in Europe and Africa. He enlisted in the Air Force after the war and served until 1967, when he was discharged a master sergeant. Returning to Santa Rosa, he worked in his mother's rest home until he retired in 1987. He and his wife, Millie, were married 40 years. Freeland was a 42-year member of Santa Rosa Encampment 53 of the Odd Fellows. He was a Past Grand Marshal of the Odd Fellows for the State of California. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Air Force Sergeants Association.

His wife said he kept busy in genealogy, later with his computer. He also was a rock hound and made jewelry from rock finds. He enjoyed photography in his early years, liked music and had a record collection he taped to play in his car. As a fisherman, he took his family stream fishing in September to Oregon. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Freeland Stengl of Santa Rosa; son-in-law, Timothy Doherty of Santa Rosa; brother, Elson Freeland of Santa Rosa; three grandchildren; and many friends. A memorial service will be at noon today at Santa Rosa Memorial Park. Memorial donations are preferred to The Odd Fellows Home of Saratoga Building Fund, care of the Grand Lodge of California, P.O. Box 2669, Saratoga 95070, or to the American Cancer Society, Home Hospice, or other nonprofit agency.
