Doris Fredette Fitzpatrick, 88, a longtime resident of Damy Drive in Franklin, died peacefully in the early hours of January 9, 2011 with her loving family by her side, at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen, NH. Doris (Fredette) was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on November 5, 1922, the second of four children to John Fredette, and Dora (Webb) Fredette. She and her siblings lost their mother at a very young age, and were subsequently fostered out to a farm family, in Lunenburg, Mass. Here, she learned independence and hard work very early in her life. She and her siblings stuck together in the face of many challenges throughout their lives, which was a testament to their strength, and a gift that she passed on to her own family. While raising her family Doris continued to work outside the home in various jobs. She later became a nurse's aide, and a school volunteer, dedicating her life to caring for others. First, at the Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg Mass., followed by many years at the Mt. Elam Nursing Home in Leominster, Mass. After moving to New Hampshire in 1984, to be closer to her grown children, she worked at the Peabody home in Franklin. She devoted over eight years to be by her husband's side during a long illness, until his death in 1995. During this time, she became a volunteer through the Friends Foster Grandparent Program, for over ten years, working with students at Union Sanborn School in Tilton. Doris had an adventurous spirit, a wonderful sense of humor, and a green thumb. She enjoyed traveling with her children later in life visiting Hawaii, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, as well as Nashville, Savannah, and more. She was a quick witted woman who lit up the room with her humor. She loved plants, flowers and gardening and many crafts. She was active in the Garden Club, Apollo Club, and the Women's Auxiliary of the Franklin VFW. Doris was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Tilton. She was predeceased by her husband James J. Fitzpatrick, Jr, brothers William and John Fredette, and her sister Claire (Fredette) Seretto. She is survived by her five daughters; Donna Moon of Pittsfield, Mass, Donna Fitzpatrick of Reading, Mass, Kathy Fitzpatrick of Waterbury, CT, Gail Fitzpatrick and husband Gary Cassidy of East Andover, Robyn Haynes and husband Leslie of Andover, NH and her son Jay Fitzpatrick, III and his wife Lorraine Keating of East Andover. She is also survived by six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 P. M. at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A graveside service will be held in the spring at St. John Cemetery in Tilton.
