Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, William was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 20, 1946.

William's remains, along with the remains of his entire crew, were recovered in 2008. Partial remains of each crew members were interred together in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

Part of William's remains, at the families request, were also interred in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, Missouri.

William served as a Technical Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D "The Swan" #42-40475, 63rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He resided in St. Louis County, Missouri prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 13, 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a molder and also as Single, without dependents.

William was originally declared "Missing In Action" when his crew, while on a armed reconnaissance mission over the Bismarck Sea, did not return to base.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

His official status was changed to "Killed In Action" with the recovery of his remains.
