Ulah Mae Blackwelder, 81, a lifelong Hooker resident, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon.
Born Jan. 17, 1920 to Albert and Ida Fox on the family homestead west of Hooker and south of the Old Buffalo School, she was the youngest of four children and is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John Fox and Fred Fox; and her sister, Irma Lowry.
After attending the rural Buffalo School, she moved into Hooker and graduated as salutatorian of the HHS senior class of 1936 at the age of 16. She then attended Panhandle State University, graduating with a major in English and a minor in home economics.
She gave her heart to Jesus at the age of 19 in a camp meeting while attending college and followed the Lord in baptism.
She married her high school sweetheart Aug. 16, 1940 and was a lifelong partner to Lawrence M. Blackwelder. Who preceded her in death in 1978.
The couple lived and farmed west of Hooker where they raised their family.
An active member of the First Baptist Church of Hooker, she worked in missions with congregation and the Panhandle Baptist Association. She also taught Sunday School and was a Training Union teacher, WMU Leader and Director through Oklahoma Baptist Statewide Missions.
Her greatest gift was that of a prayer warrior and those she loved will never know the dangers they were spared as the result of her prayers.
She leaves to celebrate her life, her children, Bruce and Kay Blackwelder, Albert and Carolyn Blackwelder and Gail and Dan Gordon of Hooker; 23 grandchildren, Brent and Renee Blackwelder of Dearland, TX, Brady Blackwelder of League City, TX, Dana and David Davis of Liberal, KS, Stephanie and Chris Liebman of Hardesty, Bettina and T.J. Bryant of Waukomis, Bart and Irene Blackwelder of Kansas City, MO, Ben and Robbie Blackwelder of Guymon, Jacob and Katie Blackwelder of Isabell, KS, Chandra and Scott Case of Manhattan, KS, Kelly and Brent Miller of Frankfurt, Germany, Codie Phelps of Oklahoma City and Caleb Phelps and Sean Phelps of Hooker; 35 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces , nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Hooker with Bro. Ron Mimms officiating.
Interment was in the Hooker Cemetery under the direction of the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home of Hooker.
