Ardmore — Mattie Merle Fox Wood Baker, 93, was born at her home in rural Garvin County, Okla., on August 19, 1917, the fourth daughter of Mary Elizabeth Sadler Fox and R.C. Fox. She went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 28, 2011, at Ardmore Mercy Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.
Services will be conducted by Dr. Alton Fannin, Thursday, March 3, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Griffin-Hillcrest Funeral Home, Ardmore, Okla. Entombment will be at Hillcrest Mausoleum.
After graduating from Zaneis High School, she married Everett Clifton Wood in July 1934, then attended Southeastern Oklahoma State Teachers College in Durant, Okla. A talented musician, she had her own radio show in the 1930s called "Mattie Wood Sings" which aired out of Sherman, Texas. They moved to Ardmore and established Western Supply Company, home of Clifton's hand tooled leather goods. To this union was born her only daughter, Carol Jean Wood Thomason.
On October 10, 1973, Mattie married Freeman C. Baker in Whitesboro, Texas. Ms. Baker was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Ardmore, where she formerly served as church pianist and Sunday School teacher for 12 year old girls. For many years she sang in the church choir and was first accompanist and charter member of the "Keenager Choir". She was accompanist for the Chapel class in Sunday School until health issues forced her to be a shut-in, but faithfully "attended" First Baptist services every Sunday via television on Cable Channel 21.
Mattie was very active in the parent-teacher organization while her daughter was in elementary school, serving as the very first president of the Charles Evans PTA in 1953-54. She was the president of the PTA Council for all of Ardmore's schools in 1954-1955, and was the first president of the Will Rogers PTA in 1956-57. She was always the "home room mother" and helped with school musicals, Brownies, Girl Scouts and Falls Creek church camp sponsor. In her professional career, she was office manager for Ardmore Leather Corporation. In her spare time she enjoyed Garden club, bridge and playing the piano.
The "lights of her life" were her three grandsons, Robert Thomason Jr., Russell Thomason and Ryan Thomason and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Clifton Wood; second husband, Freeman C. Baker; sisters, Bessie Pearl Fox Worsham, Gertrude Velma Fox Erickson and Lillie Belle Fox; and brothers, R.C. Fox Jr., and James Fox.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Jean Wood Thomason and husband, Bob of Ardmore; grandsons, Robert Thomason Jr. and wife, Elena and children, Trae, Isabel and Brooklyn of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Russell Thomason and wife, Holly and children Jordyn, Reghan and Colten of Princeton, Indiana; Ryan Thomason and wife, Amanda and daughters, Albanee and (expected in July with great anticipation) Bayler of Ardmore. She is also survived by Freeman's children who were adults when Mattie and Freeman married and warmly welcomed her into their family. Freeman's daughters: Mary Whatley and husband, Glen of Bowie, Texas, and her daughter, LeAnn and Alan Spears and family of Gainesville, Texas; Kathey Baker of Lone Grove, Okla., and her children, Ray and Johnna Laird and family of Ardmore and Mike Laird of Oklahoma City. Freeman's son: Joe Baker and wife, Karen of Ardmore and their sons, Jim and Jerry and their families. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews, a very special night sitter during the last four months, Linda Graham, Marietta, and many friends.
Pall Bearers will be Emmett Hudgins, Gary Gosdin, Gene Thompson, Carroll Hendershott, Larry Scott and Jerrell Allen.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Ardmore, Falls Creek Renovation Fund, 225 1st Avenue SW, Ardmore, OK 73401.
