Evagene "Gene" Fowler (1931-2012) | A life lived long and fruitful has been received into His home in heaven - the Lord has called her name. Evagene was known by her friends as Gene, her children as Mom, to grandchildren and her all-around personal preference was to just be called "Granny". Born in Hugoton, KS, she was raised most her life in the wheat, farm and cattle country of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. A true cowgirl; beautiful and tough. That resilient character was instilled in her by her adventurous life traveled while living in 21 cities before moving to San Jose, CA, in 1988. This long time resident at The Villages, was the daughter of hotel /restaurant entrepreneur parents, and a war time teenager that fell in love and married a New Mexico cowboy at age 15. Gene and her husband, Bill Tatom, then spent 4 years riding side-by-side before starting their family of four children raised on and around the Bell Ranch in New Mexico and the Panhandle of Texas. Not only a dedicated wife, mother and community volunteer, Gene worked all of her adult life. Blessed with diverse talents she was adaptable to whatever she needed to do to survive. Cowhand, postmaster, waitress, hairdresser and great saleswoman. A real go-getter, accomplished in her accounting career for 35 years, and even after retirement started her own alterations business. Always a loyal employee and detail oriented in her many years of volunteer work for Air Systems Foundation, inc., and the Emergency Preparedness Committee at The Villages. Gene was an honorary lifetime member of the US Air Force Ground Observance Squadron. Hobbies included art and crafts, sewing, Sudoku, reading, attending family sports events, dancing, gardening and cooking. She was a wonderful cook. And Gene was a lady of memorable words. She was capable of circling the wagons, and nothing exceeded her passion for her family. A little lady with a big heart who never gave up - but just gave out.
