FOUTS, Margaret J.
May 16, 2003
Margaret J. Ettleman was born March 11, 1916, the daughter of Scott and Carrie TenEyck Fouts. She died Friday, May 2, 2003 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of eighty-seven.
Margaret was born at her home south of Dow City, where she grew up, beginning her education in a rural school near her home. She attended the Dow City Community High School, graduating with the class of 1934. She continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake receiving her teachers diploma the following year. Following her education, Margaret returned to the Dow City region where she was a teacher in various rural schools until she was united in marriage to Kenneth Ettleman May 25, 1943 in Dow City.
Kenneth was serving in the United States Navy based in Florida so the couple settled there until Kenneth was discharged in 1945. While living in Florida, Margaret worked in a department store. After returning home to the Dow City area, Margaret was a homemaker until opening a 24 hour service station and cafe in Dow City in the early 1950's. In the early 1960's they built a motel.
Margaret baked six pies each day for the cafe for many years, and became well known in the region for those savory pies which she also enjoyed baking for other local events in the area. She was also involved in the business events of the service station and motel. In addition to baking, Margaret enjoyed cleaning, cooking and gardening, specifically, her flower gardens which she had all around in the yard. Most of all, she enjoyed the time she had with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She was active in community events that included TAP for which she was a board member and director of clothing. She was a member and historian of the American Legion and a member and church historian of the Community of Christ Church in Dow City. Though her days were busy, her character, love and compassion to her family and friends was evidenced by sending sympathy, anniversary, birthday and other well wishing cards to members of the community.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Kenneth on February 25, 1984.
