He resided in Cameron County, Texas prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on May 6, 1941, prior to the war, at Camp Bowie, Brownwood, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Poultry farmer and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24H #41-29423 took off from Attlebridge, England on a bombing mission over Oschersleben, Germany. They were attacked by German fighter planes which damaged the #1 engine causing them to crash in Germany during the war. One parachute was seen leaving the B-24.
William was "Killed In Action" on this mission.
He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on April 3, 1951.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Service # O-687576
The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldiers & sailors were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
