Lillian Foster Ackley, 77, of 211 Warren St.,
Sayre, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2003,
following a brief illness. Born Sept. 11, 1925
in East Smithfield, she was the eldest daughter
of the late Thomas and Mary Catherine Lane Foster.
She was a 1944 graduate of Waverly, N.Y., High
School and married Norman S. Ackley the same
year. He predeceased her in June 1981. She was
employed at the Robert Packer Hospital for over
24 years before retiring as the executive secretary
to the director of the School of Nursing. During
this period, she was an active columnist contributor
to numerous local and national publications, including
The Daily Review, Star-Gazette, The Evening Times,
Grit and Lion International Magazine. After retirement,
she served as the executive secretary for the Valley Economic Development Association (VEDA). She was a
big backer of the "Education for Industry Program,"
won her the Toastmasters International Communication
and Leadership Award in 1990. Following surgery for
a brain tumor in 1990, she was left legally blind.
After recovering from surgery, she attended the Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind. Following graduation
from the Guild in 1992, she re-entered the workforce
as the secretary of deputy director of Rural Development Association (RDA), northeast regional office in Sayre.
She also continued as a columnist contributor to the
Review during this time. She continued her education
at the GPG for the Blind and became proficient using a special computer with voice capability. She received the "Outstanding Trainer Award" recognizing outstanding progress and inspiration in 1993. At the age of 73, a stroke forced her to discontinue her column for the
Review. She is survived by: a daughter, Sharon May
of East Hampton, Conn.; son, Thomas Ackley of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Stephanie Coburn, Wade Thomas,
Wyatt Thomas, Michael Thomas and Nancy Ackley, Larry Boughton Jr. and Brett Ackley; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Mausteller of Florida, Helen Babcock
(with whom she resided) of Sayre and Margaret Allen of South Waverly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lillian was predeceased by: her husband, Norman;
children, Steven Ackley and Susan Boughton; three
sisters, Dorothy Stone, Jean Card and Betty Riley; and a brother, Thomas R. Foster. Family and friends may call Tuesday, April 15 from 1-3 p.m. at the Lowery Funeral
Home, 225 S. Main St., Athens. Funeral services will
follow Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the
Rev. Paul Barrett, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, Athens, officiating. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Memorials may be directed in her
