DAVENPORT -- Services for John Isaiah Foster, of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. John died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Genesis Medical Center-West, Davenport. John Isaiah Foster was born April 18, 1921, in Bloomfield, Iowa, the youngest son of C. C. and Clara (Bollman) Foster. He attended rural Davis County schools and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1938. After farming for a year until old enough to have a teaching certificate, he taught in a one-room school for three years prior to enlisting during World War II. He served in China for 22 months in the 14th Air Force with the Flying Tigers. Following the war, he returned to continue his education at the University of Iowa, from which he received B.S and M.S. degrees. He met Leah Anderson during college, and they were married Dec. 27, 1947. Mr. Foster taught accounting and business education for 37 years, including four years at Davenport High School and 23 years at Davenport West. He retired from teaching in 1983. He had the distinction of having taught in both the smallest (one student) and largest schools in Iowa during his career. He was devoted to his family, including many years of hands-on care for his handicapped daughter. In later years, he cherished time spent with his granddaughter. He was an advocate for handicapped persons in the community. His interests included gardening, recycling, reading and crossword puzzles, and he was a big Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He never met a stranger, always claiming that "everyone has a story-all you have to do is listen." Despite major health problems in recent years, he maintained a positive attitude and enjoyed every day to the fullest. Survivors include his wife; daughter, Gail, of Davenport; son, Craig, daughter-in-law, Nancy, and granddaughter, Teresa, of Davenport; and sister, Margaret Baird, of Ottumwa, Iowa. He was preceded in death by an infant twin daughter, Vail, his parents, sister, Lorene Kline, and brother, Kenneth. Always an advocate of recycling, Mr. Foster donated his eyes to the Iowa Lions Eye Bank. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Handicapped Development Center Endowment Fund.
