Cora was the daughter of Washington Hanscom Jewell of Leeds, Maine, and Theresa Nancy Walton of Chesterville, Maine. After her father married, he went by the name of George W. Jewell, so he has a findagrave memorial under two names. The one for Washington Hanscom Jewell explains why he changed his name, provides details his military service, and also explains a glitch in the Leeds vital records. Both memorials can be linked to through Theresa's memorial.
Cora was the second of six children. Carrie and Cora were born, in New Hampshire, Ralph and Fannie were born in Illinois, Gracilla's birth place is unknown and a brother named Ora Myron was born in Leeds, Maine.
Some time about 1877 her parents' marriage broke up, though the circumstances of what happened next are not known. In December 1877, her pregnant mother, and at least some of the children were admitted to the "town farm" (aka poor farm) in Leeds, Maine. Ora was born at the town farm in May. No record has been found that indicates George had come to Maine with his family at this time. In December 1878 he remarried in Joliet, Illinois.
The 1880 census shows that during this year Cora lived with the Keen family, of nearby Poland, Maine. Carrie and Ralph also lived with area families, as likely these three were old enough to work for their keep. The youngest three children still lived at the poor farm, and had been there two and a half years. The special census for homeless children said that these three were "abandoned" by their parents. That year Theresa Jewell lived twelve miles away, employed as a housekeeper for a widower farmer. The youngest two children may have died, as there are no additional records on them after this census. In later years, at least three of the Jewell children lived with their father at various times. There are no records which indicate that Theresa reunited with her children, though she died in 1892, so that there is a smaller window of time for there to have been records.
The 1887 Joliet, Illinois city directory shows that Cora and Ralph had returned to Illinois to live with their father. Ralph continued to live with his father for most of the following decade. Cora returned to Maine.
In November 1896 Cora married to Eugene Foss of Mount Vernon, Maine. The marriage record says she had been previously divorced, though no other records of this earlier marriage have been found. Less than five months later she died in Mount Vernon of "La Grippe," which was the flu. Her death record was listed under her maiden name. Eugene remarried two years later.
Cora's actual place of burial is unknown. Mount Vernon has no record of a grave, and her grave was not found in the surrounding towns. Her mother's grave also has not been located, though her death records says she would be buried in Fayette, Maine.
