Born Jan. 13, 1918, in Curby, she was the daughter of the late Bealie and Lola Wynn Rolle.
She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Indiana University and taught school, mostly fifth grade, for 38 years until she retired in 1980. She was a member of Campbellsburg First Baptist Church, Indiana and National Retired Teachers associations, Phi Beta Psi and Delta Kappa Gamma sororities, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Knofel Fortner, and a brother, Orville Rolle.
Survivors include a son, Dr. William R. Fortner of Floyds Knobs; two sisters, Lavone Rolle of Curby and Berdean Beasley of Milltown; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson, Grantley Fortner of Carmel.
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 12, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Weathers Funeral Home in Salem, and Saturday, Jan. 12, after noon at Campbellsburg First Baptist Church.
Funeral: Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. at the church with burial in Cresthaven Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the Washington County Community Foundation Amzel and Knofel Fortner Scholarship Fund.
