GREENVILLE — Ruth Anne Atkins, 88, of Greenville died at 8:09 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, after a lengthy illness. Ruth Anne was born June 14, 1921, in Greenville, the daughter of Verna Elmore Ford and Mayme Nell Paxton Ford. She was a member of First Christian Church in Greenville and she was a musician, seamstress, artist-painter and knitter, and she loved to dance, read a good book and cook for her family. She graduated from Murray State University in 1942 and she retired in 1974 from Greenville High School as an English teacher after 24 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James R. Ford and Thomas Gaines (Izora Mercer) Ford, two sisters, Opal Ford (Val) Valentine and Barbara Louella (Robert) Walker; and one grandchild, Sarah Vick Atkins.
Ruth Anne is survived by her husband, James Ernest Atkins Sr. of Greenville. They were married in 1943 and have been married for 66 years. She is also survived by one son, James "Jamie" Ernest (Paula) Atkins Jr. of Greenville; one daughter, Jennifer Ford (David) Kassner of Mount Vernon, Ill.; four grandchildren, Andrew Atkins, Thomas (Robin) Atkins, Carol Anne Johnson and Candace Anne Johnson (J.D.) Stock; seven great-grandchildren, James, Justin, Brendan, Reagan, Courtney, Gideon and Ben; two nieces, Pat Kockritz and Martha (Ray) Smith; and one nephew, John (Elizabeth) Ford.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at Gary's Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Rev. Terry Kisler officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Greenville. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
